For those of you in a panic re registration- there is no cause for this.

Here are some facts

  • The NZSSA is the Ministry of Health recognised Regulator of the profession.
  • As the regulator the NZSSA ensures that the profession is consistent with other professions, be they regulated or self-regulated.
  • The NZSSA is the Regulator permitted to make the rules for the profession.
  • The 1st of January  is four and a half months away giving sterile technicians time to put their portfolios together and to submit for assessment. Registration has been available for many years and in some hospitals it is required as a Quality Assurance measure for that profession. Registration is not something new.
  • This year the NZSSA submitted to Government as they want to be fully registered (like nurses or anaesthetic technicians) or accredited. Either way it will require every single technician in NZ to be registered with the NZSSA
  • If you are not registered and have it submitted by 1 January then you will not have to do anything further for 3 years. Those who do not are likely to have to complete a lot more work for registration. around their scope of Practice and Competencies.
  • The NZSSA cannot make you lose your job, however we can advise your employer that you are not registered and it will be up to your employer and HR what happens next.
